1. What is Guayusa Tea?

We have written an extensive article on this topic. If you want to learn more about Guayusa Tea, read our article " What is Guayusa Tea?". Effect, preparation, advantages, purchase " by.

At this point, therefore, only a brief introduction. Guayusa is the most caffeinated drink in the world and comes from the Amazon rainforest. Guayusa is grown in permaculture, which protects the rainforest from further deforestation and preserves biodiversity. Read our article on growing guayusa for more information. Despite the high caffeine content, the guayusa tea effect is different from that of coffee, guarana, mate, green tea, etc. You can find out why in our article on the guayusa tea effect .

2. Does the guayusa steeping time matter?

It depends on the perspective! If you are concerned about the taste and are you afraid that the guayusa tea will be bitter, then we can reassure you at this point! Guayusa tea does not become bitter even with long steeping times - of course stronger, but no comparison to black tea and green tea. You can find instructions for green tea here .

When it comes to the ingredients , the brewing time sometimes makes a difference. We recommend a steeping time of 5 minutes to 15 minutes to dissolve all of the caffeine content if you infuse guayusa with boiling water. It takes a little longer to dissolve all the antioxidants and other active ingredients such as theobromine , theophylline and L-theanine . We therefore generally recommend preparing Guayusa tea with a sieve and not removing it.

3. 10 TOP variants for preparing Guayusa tea

At GUYA, we naturally have a particularly large selection with 7 different types of Guayusa tea . Therefore, in the following Guayusa tea preparations, you will also find references to the varieties that are best suited for it. Of course, each method is also possible, especially with our 100% Guayusa varieties.

3.1. Normal Guayusa tea preparation in tea strainer, teapot, thermos flask

The most common Guayusa tea preparation is definitely that of a conventional herbal tea, with a tea strainer , teapot , thermos flask or, if you don't have one of these, then of course a tea bag made of fabric or a disposable tea bag also works.

Guayusa tea has the advantage of not becoming bitter. Accordingly, you can simply leave it in the sieve and cup or pot. Our teapot and thermos each have removable stainless steel tea strainers that filter most of the tea. For near 100% filtering we recommend our Dripper, more on that later.

  1. Use about 1 large heaped teaspoon of Guayusa tea per 400ml glass
    1. For a teapot with approx. 1L use 3 teaspoons or approx. 9g
  2. Use 100ºC hot water and pour over the guayusa tea
  3. Let the Guayusa tea steep for at least 5 minutes, preferably 15 minutes - you can find our recommendations for each variety here .
    1. For the best effect, simply leave the tea strainer in the cup or pot .

3.2. Dripper for Guayusa powder

Our dripper is specially designed for our powder products PURE-POWDER and GUAYUSA-COFFEE , but can of course also be used for our teas. The advantage is the double-walled and extra fine stainless steel sieve, which does not let any tea particles into your water.

For the preparation with our Guayusa powders

  1. Use about 2 teaspoons for a pot
  2. Douse the powder with 100ºC hot water
    1. slowly until all the powder is wet
    2. then pour it up to the edge of the sieve
  3. Wait for the water to go through the strainer
  4. Repeat the process until the pot is full.

Due to the large surface of the powder particles, the active ingredients dissolve particularly quickly. You can make a second infusion, but it will be more watery.

For the preparation with our Guayusa teas

  1. Use 2 tablespoons for a dripper pot
  2. Pour 100ºC hot water over the tea
    1. until the tea floats in the strainer
    2. As with the first guayusa tea preparation, wait 5-15 minutes

3.3. Cold Brew Guayusa Tea Preparation

Of course you can also prepare a cold brew with guayusa. You can also find a detailed recipe with lemon and panela sugar in this article .

For a cold brew, we definitely recommend using a strainer and not a tea bag.

  1. Use 1 heaped tablespoon per 400ml glass , that's about 3g
  2. Use 3 heaped tablespoons per 1L pot , that's about 9g
  3. Pour tap water over the guayusa tea
  4. Place it in the fridge for 4 to 12 hours , depending on the variety
  5. enjoy your cold brew

A Guayusa cold brew has a significantly different taste than a hot brewed Guayusa tea. A little softer and sweeter. Incidentally, a cold brew works with all our varieties. Personally, we feel CHAI the least. However, CHAI is better suited for another preparation, more on that below.

3.4. Ice Brew Guayusa preparation

The best way to make a Guayusa Ice Brew is with our powder, as the surface of the powder is larger and the active ingredients are released better. You can find an Ice-Brew recipe in our article “ Ice-Brew Guayusa Tea – Summer Recipe ”.

  1. Use our Dripper or a coffee filter . It should be tapered and fine-pored.
  2. Fill the sieve with powder as usual
  3. Stack ice cubes or crushed ice on top of the powder
  4. Wait for the ice cubes to melt
  5. If necessary, repeat the process
  6. Enjoy your ice cold Guayusa !

3.5. Guayusa Latte

Coffee latte, matcha latte, beetroot latte, even preparation as a guayusa latte is possible! The types PURE , DARK , CHAI , PURE-POWDER and of course GUAYUSA-COFFEE are best suited here.

  1. Prepare a regular guayusa tea ,
    1. or use a mocha or coffee maker with the powder and make a strong espresso
  2. Boil up some oat milk , almond milk , soy milk , or cow's milk
  3. Whip the milk or use a tool
  4. Pour the milk into a glass and mix it with the guayusa .

So that your Guayusa latte is also something for the eye, we recommend using a mocha for the Guayusa tea preparation. You will receive a correspondingly small amount of Guayusa tea , but it is particularly strong.

3.6. Guayusa espresso

We already let it shine through when preparing the Guayusa latte.

The best way to prepare a Guayusa espresso is with a mocha or espresso machine. Use our powder for this.

  1. Fill your mocha with water .
  2. Fill the mocha with our Guayusa powder .
    1. Use a little less than you would with coffee - the leaves are opening.
  3. Boil the guayusa .
  4. Enjoy an extremely strong and bitter Guayusa.

A Guayusa espresso is the only Guayusa preparation that tastes bitter. This is because the high steam temperature dissolves all the polyphenols present, not many, but enough to make the taste more coffee-like.

3.7. Guayusa from the coffee maker

If you have a coffee machine at home, you can easily prepare our Guayusa powder in it. Just use a little less guayusa powder or guayusa coffee powder than you would with pure coffee. The guayusa leaves soak up water and open up accordingly. If you take too much, it clogs the pores of the machine.

3.8. Bulletproof Guayusa Tea

We have an exact Guayusa Bulletproof recipe for this as well. Feel free to read the post if you want to learn more about Bulletproof Tea and Coffee. There are two ways to prepare it.

version 1

  1. Prepare yourself a traditional guayusa . See point 3.9.
  2. Follow the steps of variant 2

Variant 2

  1. prepare yourself a Guayusa tea with sieve , dripper or mocha
  2. Mix in a teaspoon of MCT or coconut oil
  3. Enjoy your bulletproof guayusa tea

Incidentally, bulletproof coffee and tea became known through the ketogenic diet and the author Tim Ferris . The tea with oil, or more traditionally with butter or fresh cow's milk, aims to keep the body in ketosis after waking up in the morning before eating something around midday.

3.9. Traditional Guayusa tea preparation

You can find out how the Kichwa Indians in Ecuador use and prepare it in our article on the traditional use of guayusa .

For a truly traditional guayusa, you'll need a campfire and lots of fresh leaves. Very few will have that ;) . As an alternative you can of course use our Guayusa PURE or DARK, as well as a saucepan.

  1. Take about 10g 3 to 4 tablespoons Guayusa tea per liter
  2. Boil the leaves directly in a saucepan with water
  3. Now turn the heat down to minimum and let the tea simmer for about 20 to 30 minutes
  4. Strain the leaves and drink the guayusa tea

This preparation of guayusa is no longer particularly tasty. The tea is extremely bitter, but of course also has a particularly strong effect.

In laboratory tests, we found that the caffeine is already completely dissolved after about 15 minutes. All the other plant active ingredients, however, take longer. If you want to use Guayusa for lucid dreaming or if you really want to have all the antioxidants in your tea, you can use this method.

3.10. Guayusa tea blends

Just as we have different Guayusa varieties at GUYA, you can of course also create your own variety. Here are some delicious variants that we like to drink at GUYA ourselves.

  1. Guayusa with hibiscus
  2. Guayusa with mint
  3. Guayusa with green tea
  4. Guayusa with lemon leaves
  5. Guayusa with dried apple pieces and cinnamon
  6. Guayusa powder with cocoa powder
  7. Guayusa with ginger
  8. Guayusa with ginger and lemon
  9. Guayusa with Moringa

4. Guayusa tea varieties and their differences in preparation

You can prepare the 100% Guayusa varieties PURE and DARK as in the instructions. Our other varieties, if not already described above, have some special features that we list for you here.

ORANGE MINT

In addition to guayusa, the ORANGE-MINT variety also has orange peel, mint and liquorice. Unlike orange juice, orange peel is known to be bitter. Brewed as a tea, this bitter note comes through as well. If you let it steep for too long, the taste will turn bitter.

We recommend:

  1. 1 tablespoon approx. 3g per 400ml
  2. 100ºC water
  3. 5 to 10 minutes steeping time

CHAI

CHAI is our weakest strain. Accordingly, it features cinnamon first, followed by guayusa, cloves, cardamom, and liquorice. With a long brewing time of 15 minutes and longer, the taste of cinnamon and liquorice comes to the fore. Many of our customers love exactly that about this strain. However, if you don't want it to be quite as intense, we recommend the following Guayusa CHAI preparation:

  1. 1 tablespoon approx. 3g per 400ml
  2. 100ºC water
  3. 5 to 10 minutes steeping time

LEMONGRASS

Our medium-strength variety with ORANGE-MINT, it contains equal amounts of guayusa and lemongrass. The brewing time does not matter for the variety, since neither guayusa nor lemongrass become bitter.

  1. 1 tablespoon approx. 3g per 400ml
  2. 100ºC water
  3. 10 minutes steeping time and more

Conclusion

Guayusa is extremely simple to prepare and yet offers many opportunities to let off steam and thus appeal to different tastes. The fact that guayusa hardly gets bitter, even with long steeping times, is a huge advantage. Only by boiling or hot steam and pressure does a bitter tea brew develop, which is then also particularly strong.
